According to a report by Punch on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, on Tuesday criticised Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde over what he described as the politicisation of the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oyo State.

Akume maintained that President Bola Tinubu placed greater priority on ensuring the safe rescue of the victims than on making telephone calls during the security operation.

According to him, the President’s immediate concern was to support efforts aimed at securing the release of those abducted through coordinated security measures rather than engaging in actions that would have little impact on the rescue mission.Favor And Life Battles? Akume stated that President Tinubu remained focused on intelligence-driven security operations throughout the period of the abduction.

He said the administration concentrated on working with security agencies to ensure the victims were rescued safely, stressing that the government’s response was guided by practical action instead of what he described as “public grandstanding.”

According to the SGF, the President’s handling of the incident reflected his administration’s commitment to prioritising the safety and security of citizens whenever such situations arise.

The SGF’s position was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday by his media aide, Yomi Odunuga.

The statement said Akume made the remarks in Abuja while receiving members of the Global Association of Christian and Muslim Youth for Peace and Development, led by its President, Peter Bassey.

During the meeting, Akume addressed issues relating to the government’s response to the abduction and the comments that followed the successful rescue of the victims.

His remarks came in response to Governor Makinde’s recent complaint that President Tinubu had not called him after the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

Makinde had made the observation while formally assuming responsibility for the welfare, rehabilitation, and education of the 45 teachers and pupils who were rescued after spending 56 days in captivity.

During the event held on Monday, the governor also called for a United Nations-backed investigation into the abduction, stating that Nigerians deserved a comprehensive account of the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Responding to those comments, Akume suggested that the President’s attention was directed towards more pressing responsibilities than making telephone calls during the rescue operation.

He reiterated that the administration’s priority was to ensure the victims regained their freedom through effective security interventions.

The SGF also described President Tinubu as a leader whose style of governance is centred on practical achievements and measurable outcomes rather than public rhetoric, adding that the President prefers action to words in addressing national challenges.

He said, “This is why I tell people that Asiwaju (the President) is a doer. He is not a talker. He is like the Centurion of the old Roman Empire whose services were rendered in deeds and not in words. His leadership is defined by action and results.”
