Speaking during plenary at the Senate on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, as aired by AIT News, Senator Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole, has criticised the Governor of Oyo state Seyi Makinde over his reported call for the United Nations to investigate the circumstances surrounding the abduction and rescue of schoolchildren in the state.

The former Edo State governor argued that the successful rescue operation should be commended rather than subjected to political controversy, praising the armed forces and other security agencies for securing the victims’ release without paying ransom.

“Mr. Senate President, I read this morning in newspapers and I’ve seen it with the electronic. The governor of Oyo State calling on the United Nations to investigate the overall circumstances surrounding the kidnap and even the rescue. I thought that was the most unstatemently. He was carrying partisan politics too far and this nation should condemn his unguided statement,” he said.

The senator maintained that Nigeria, as a sovereign nation, possesses the capacity to investigate matters within its borders and should not seek external intervention in the rescue operation.

“Nigeria is a sovereign nation. When we wake up and call on foreign authorities to investigate, this is one case in which our armed forces have shown that without paying ransom, even if it meant that these children and some of the elders had to be in captivity for almost two months, that the armed forces were working quietly to have these rescue operations, which as well captured in this motion, led to some loss of life,” Oshiomhole stated.

He argued that questioning the circumstances surrounding the operation diminishes the efforts of the military and other security agencies involved in securing the victims’ freedom.

“To trivialize it, to suggest as the governor of Oyo State seems to have done, that there is something that is not open, that the UN needs to unearth the circumstances, is to question the sovereignty of our nation and to downplay the achievement of the commander-in-chief, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and all the service chiefs and in fact all those involved in this process,” he added.

Oshiomhole further called for national unity in recognising the efforts of the armed forces, insisting that security achievements should rise above partisan politics.

“I think that is a moment in the history of a nation when across party divide we should stand in unison to commend what has happened, I mean the way these people were released and to encourage the armed forces to build on it, that they should extend and get more gadgets. I mean it’s not possible for them to share with us what some of the things they did, like I heard they were able to identify the guys, arrest some of their relatives,” he said.

Concluding his remarks, the senator urged the National Assembly to reject what he described as attempts to politicise the rescue operation.

“But I want us to resolve that the governor of Oyo State should not be seen as downplaying, undermining and politicizing an issue in which ought to be something that the whole nation, across party divide, should stand in unison to commend our armed forces for what they have accomplished,” Oshiomhole stated.
