‘We’re Not Intimidated’ – Remi Tinubu Defends ‘Akara Business’ Advice, Says Beneficiaries Appreciate Govt Support

Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu has responded to the criticism that followed her recent advice encouraging unemployed women to consider small-scale businesses, including frying and selling akara, as a means of earning a living.

The remarks, which were captured in a viral video, generated widespread reactions on social media, with many Nigerians, particularly young people, criticising the advice and arguing that it did not adequately address the country’s economic challenges and unemployment situation.

Speaking during an event in Jigawa State on Monday, the First Lady dismissed the backlash, insisting that those who directly benefited from the initiative appreciated the support being provided.

According to her, the programme is not limited to akara vendors but is designed to empower various categories of small-scale traders and entrepreneurs.

“I heard people talking about akara sellers. It is not only akara sellers. We are also supporting tomato sellers, maize sellers, vegetable sellers, and many other petty traders,” she said.

Mrs. Tinubu maintained that her office would continue implementing programmes aimed at supporting grassroots businesses despite the criticism.

“I know the beneficiaries appreciate it, and we’re not intimidated by the wrong reports. We will continue to make sure that we care for our people,” she added.

The First Lady’s comments come amid ongoing public debate over government efforts to address rising unemployment and the high cost of living, with many Nigerians calling for broader economic reforms and expanded job creation initiatives.

Her latest remarks underscore the administration’s position that supporting micro-enterprises and small businesses remains one of the strategies for improving livelihoods and promoting economic inclusion at the grassroots level.
