Petition To Replay Argentina Vs Spain World Cup Final Surpasses 61,000 Signatures

A growing number of Argentine football fans have launched an online campaign calling for the 2026 FIFA World Cup final between Argentina and Spain to be replayed.

The petition, published on Change.org, has attracted more than 61,500 signatures, with supporters urging FIFA to review the events of the July 19 final played in New York.

The campaign was initiated by Argentine supporter Gisela Sánchez, who questioned the officiating of Slovenian referee Slavko Vinčić during the showpiece encounter.

According to the petition, several refereeing decisions allegedly influenced the outcome of the match, which Spain won 1-0 to claim their second FIFA World Cup title. The petition also raises allegations of irregularities during the final, although it does not present independently verifiable evidence to substantiate those claims.

Despite the growing support for the campaign, petitions hosted on platforms such as Change.org do not have any legal or regulatory authority over FIFA decisions and cannot compel football’s governing body to alter the outcome of an official match.

Under FIFA’s regulations, a World Cup match can only be replayed under exceptional circumstances, such as proven breaches of the Laws of the Game or rulings by the appropriate judicial or disciplinary bodies. Disputed refereeing decisions alone are generally not grounds for ordering a replay.

The Argentine campaign comes just days after a similar online petition was launched by French supporters following their semi-final defeat to Spain. That petition amassed more than 82,000 signatures, with fans calling for the match to be replayed over a controversial incident that preceded the penalty which gave Spain the lead.

Like the French campaign, however, the Argentine petition has had no effect on the tournament’s official results.

Following the final, thousands of Argentina supporters gathered in different parts of the country to celebrate the national team’s impressive run to the championship match despite narrowly missing out on successfully defending the World Cup title.

While the online petition continues to attract signatures, there has been no indication from FIFA that it intends to review or reconsider the result of the final, with Spain remaining the officially recognized champions of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
