FG Renames Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway After President Tinubu

The federal government has announced that the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway would henceforth be known as the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Coastal Highway in recognition of his role in conceiving the project.

The minister of works, David Umahi, who made this announcement on Thursday, July 16, claimed that Tinubu conceived the project about 27 years ago while serving as Governor of Lagos State.

“That highway is named President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Coastal Highway. By the powers conferred on me as Minister of Works, in consultation with my Permanent Secretary, the Honourable Minister of State, directors and staff of the ministry, we decided to name it after him because of his dream for it,” Umahi said.

“He had that dream about 27 years back as Governor of Lagos State. It is one thing to dream and another thing to have the grace of God to actualise that dream. This is one man that dreams and has the grace and divine mandate to actualise that dream.”

Giving updates on the 750-kilometre Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, the minister said construction was progressing simultaneously across several sections.

He said Section One, stretching from Victoria Island to Eleko Village in Lagos State, spans 47.47 kilometres and includes a 25-metre median reserved for a future railway line.

According to him, Section Two, extending from Eleko Village to the Lagos-Ogun boundary, is about 60 per cent complete and is expected to be substantially completed by the end of November, except for some bridge works.

Umahi also said work was advancing on sections in Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Ogun and Ondo states.

He disclosed that Section Three, covering 75 kilometres from Calabar, is about 30 per cent complete, while Section Four, spanning 82 kilometres through Ogun and Ondo states, has reached about 20 per cent completion. He added that the 180-kilometre Akwa Ibom section was also progressing.

The minister also provided updates on the Sokoto-Badagry Super Highway, saying construction was ongoing from multiple sections, including Ilela, Sokoto, Kebbi and Badagry.

According to him, the project would reduce travel time between Sokoto and Lagos to about 10 hours at an average speed of 100 kilometres per hour.

He also highlighted progress on the Trans-Sahara Highway, saying the project would improve connectivity between the South-East and the Federal Capital Territory by linking sections through Ebonyi, Benue, Enugu and Kogi states.

The Federal Government’s Legacy Projects include the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, the Sokoto-Badagry Super Highway, the Trans-Sahara Highway and the Akwanga-Maiduguri Highway, all of which the Tinubu administration says are aimed at improving road infrastructure and economic integration across Nigeria.
