Trevoh Chalobah Replaces Tino Livramento In England World Cup Squad
England defender Trevoh Chalobah has been drafted into the Three Lions’ 26-man World Cup squad following the withdrawal of Tino Livramento through injury, just over 24 hours before the team’s opening fixture against Croatia.
The Football Association confirmed the change earlier today, June 16, after Newcastle United full-back Livramento suffered a calf injury during training on Sunday.
Announcing the setback earlier, England said: “Tino Livramento has withdrawn from the #ThreeLions squad due to injury.
“We’re gutted for you, Tino, and wishing you a speedy recovery.”
FIFA regulations allow participating nations to replace an outfield player up to 24 hours before their first match of the tournament, paving the way for Chalobah’s late inclusion ahead of Wednesday’s clash with Croatia in Dallas.
The FA said: “Arrangements are now being made for the Chelsea defender to make the journey to the team’s basecamp in Kansas City, while the rest of the squad will head to Dallas, Texas for the Three Lions’ opening group fixture against Croatia on Wednesday.
“FIFA regulations allow participating teams to replace an outfield player up to 24 hours before their opening fixture.
“Newcastle United defender Livramento picked up a calf injury in training on Sunday afternoon. A subsequent scan and medical assessment on Monday unfortunately confirmed he could play no further part in England’s tournament.”
The call-up has sparked a wave of reaction on social media, with fans reviving an old post Chalobah shared eight years ago. The image, now circulating widely on 𝕏, shows the FIFA World Cup trophy accompanied by the message: “One day 🙏 #Believe”.
The post, originally shared in July 2018, has taken on fresh significance after the Chelsea defender’s unexpected route into England’s World Cup squad.
While Chalobah celebrates a career milestone, there is sympathy for Livramento, whose progress has repeatedly been interrupted by injury.
According to Transfermarkt records, the defender has endured several lengthy spells on the sidelines over the past five seasons. His most serious setback came during the 2021-22 campaign when an ACL injury kept him out for 354 days. He has also missed significant periods due to knee, ankle, hamstring and thigh problems.
England face Croatia at 9 p.m. on Wednesday, June 17, in their opening group-stage match, with Chalobah set to link up with the squad in Kansas City before joining preparations for the remainder of the tournament.
