Gunmen Kills Three Security Officers During Attack On NIPSS In Plateau

The Plateau State Police Command has confirmed that three security personnel lost their lives during an attack at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) in Kuru.

The incident happened in the early hours of Tuesday, according to the command’s spokesperson, Alfred Alabo.

Although reports claimed that the victims were two soldiers and a police officer, the police did not reveal their identities.

In a statement, the command described the incident as unfortunate and expressed sadness over the loss of the officers.

“The Plateau State Police Command, on a very sad note, wishes to confirm the incident that occurred in the early hours of today, 16th June 2026, involving security personnel on duty at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, NIPSS, Kuru.

“Regrettably, three security personnel lost their lives during the incident,’ the statement reads.

The police said additional security personnel had been deployed to the area, while patrol activities have also been increased on the orders of the Commissioner of Police, Bassey Ewah, to ensure the safety of residents and prevent further incidents.

The command added that investigations into the attack have already begun and assured the public that calm has returned to the area.

“The situation is under control and normal activities have resumed. Investigation is ongoing. The command urges members of the public to remain calm and go about their lawful businesses,” the statement added.

Earlier on Tuesday, NIPSS also confirmed that a security incident occurred close to its premises but did not provide details.

In a statement issued by the institute’s spokesperson, Osime Samuel, NIPSS said the matter was quickly handled by security operatives and relevant agencies.

“The National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, wishes to inform the public that a security incident occurred in the vicinity of the Institute in the early hours of today,” the statement reads.

“The situation was promptly brought under control through the swift response of security personnel and relevant security agencies.”

“There is currently no threat to the safety of participants, staff, residents, or facilities of the Institute, and normal activities are continuing as scheduled.”

NIPSS also urged the public not to speculate about the incident, noting that investigations are still ongoing.

“The Institute is therefore unable to confirm details currently circulating on social media and other unofficial platforms,” it stated.

The institute added that it is working closely with security agencies and promised to provide accurate information as soon as it becomes available.

Meanwhile, reports from various sources claimed that the victims of the attack were two soldiers and one police officer.

However, the NIPSS urged members of the public and media organisations to rely only on information released through official channels.

Located in Kuru, Plateau State, NIPSS is Nigeria’s top institution for policy training and leadership development for senior public officials.
