Sam George Proposes ID Verification Before Accessing Adult Websites in Ghana

The Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has revealed that the government is considering a new policy that would require people to verify their identity before accessing adult websites in Ghana.

Speaking at the 4th African Inter-Parliamentary Conference on Family, Sovereignty and Values on June 4, 2026, the minister said the proposal is aimed at preventing children from being exposed to pornographic content online.

According to him, several countries have already introduced measures to restrict access to adult websites and ensure that only adults can view such content.

“Today in the United Kingdom, for you to access a pornographic website, you need to submit your driver’s license so they can determine that you are 18 years old.

“And that is why, for us, we believe that here in Ghana, and we are working with Cabinet on this, to ensure that before you access any X-rated site, you must provide either your driver’s license or your national ID card so that we know who you are and who is accessing the site, in order to prevent children from being exposed to such content,” he stated.

The Ningo Prampram Member of Parliament argued that exposure to sexual content at an early age can have serious effects on a child’s growth and development.

He said it can influence a child’s thinking, values, morality, and overall outlook on life.

“When a child is over-sexualized at an early age, it affects their development, thinking, morality, values, and standards. And the only way to break a people is to target the children.

“Because when children are damaged, that culturalization is also damaged. The fight against Africa is not against those of us sitting in this room. We are a lost case,” he remarked.

Samuel George stressed that protecting children from harmful online content should be a priority for governments and policymakers.

He added that the real challenge is ensuring that future generations are not negatively influenced by materials that could affect their values and development.

The proposed policy is currently being discussed with Cabinet and has not yet been implemented.
