‘She Was My Best Friend’ – Sister Mourns Woman Killed in Adenta Disaster

A sister of the owner of the building that collapsed at Adenta-Katamanso has shared an emotional account of her conversation with her brother after the tragic incident that claimed the life of his wife.

News of the building collapse spread on June 3, 2026, with reports confirming that one person trapped beneath the rubble had died.

Speaking to GhanaWeb’s Victoria Kyei Baffour during a visit to the scene on June 4, 2026, the grieving sister said her brother was devastated by the loss and struggled to cope with the tragedy.

According to her, her brother, who owns the building but was not inside when it collapsed, broke the heartbreaking news to her during a phone call.

“When I called my brother this morning, he sounded uneasy. He told me, ‘your friend is gone,’ referring to his wife, who had been my close friend even before their marriage,” she said.

She revealed that her brother was overwhelmed with grief and even expressed a desire to die after learning of his wife’s death.

“In his grief, he said he wanted to die, but I reminded him that he could not leave the children behind. I consoled him and urged him to take it easy,” she added.

The woman explained that her late sister-in-law was inside the room with her children and a cousin when the building started collapsing.

According to her, other family members who were downstairs managed to escape after noticing signs of danger.

“This is a family house. Before the collapse, my sister-in-law was in the room with her children and one of my cousins, while the others were downstairs. They managed to escape because they noticed the collapse earlier,” she said.

She further disclosed that the deceased, who was pregnant, lost her life while trying to protect one of her children.

“My sister-in-law tried to protect her first child by covering him, but unfortunately the building came down on her. Her son was pulled to safety,” she added.

The sister said the incident reportedly occurred around 6 p.m. and noted that although the building had been completed about two years ago, the family had only moved into it a little over a year ago.

“I heard the incident happened around 6 p.m. The building has been here for about two years, but they only moved in a year and some months ago,” she stated.

Fighting back tears, she described the deceased as more than a relative.

“She was my best friend, so I am deeply saddened by this news. My brother’s car is still trapped inside, along with other valuable items,” she disclosed.

Emergency responders later recovered the woman’s body while rescue efforts continued at the scene. Investigations are expected to determine the cause of the collapse.
