Plan your movement: Lagos announces closure of  popular bridge for rehabilitation works

The Lagos State Government has announced temporary traffic diversions ahead of the planned closure of the Iddo Bridge to facilitate critical rehabilitation and reconstruction works being carried out by the Federal Ministry of Works.

The closure, which will affect vehicular movement on the bridge, is necessary for the installation of heavy steel bridge beams as part of the ongoing reconstruction project aimed at improving the structural integrity of the strategic transport corridor.

According to the state government, the bridge will be closed in two phases. The first closure will take place from 10:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 17, to 5:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 18, while the second phase will occur on Sunday, June 21, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, said the temporary closure had become necessary to ensure the safe installation of steel beams on the bridge and to guarantee the safety of motorists and construction workers during the operation.

“The closure is part of the traffic management plans put in place to facilitate the launching of steel beams for the ongoing rehabilitation and reconstruction of Iddo Bridge by the Federal Ministry of Works,” Osiyemi said.

To minimise traffic disruptions during the exercise, the government has announced alternative routes for motorists travelling through the affected corridor.

According to Osiyemi, motorists travelling from Oyingbo and Yaba towards Ijora Olopa, Apapa and Costain are advised to use Funsho Williams Avenue to continue their journeys.

Motorists coming from Marina and heading towards Ijora Olopa, Apapa and Costain should descend the ramp to access Iddo-Onigbe, connect to Oyingbo and proceed through Murtala Muhammed Way.

Similarly, motorists travelling from Ijora Olopa and Apapa towards Carter Bridge and Marina are advised to use Eko Bridge by connecting through Apapa Road and continuing via Murtala Muhammed Way, Iddo-Onigbe and Carter Bridge.

The commissioner appealed to road users to cooperate with traffic management officials who will be deployed to strategic locations to manage vehicular movement and reduce congestion during the temporary closure.

He urged motorists to exercise patience and plan their trips ahead of time, noting that the rehabilitation works are designed to improve safety and ensure the long-term durability of one of Lagos’ key transport infrastructures.

The Lagos State Government reiterated its commitment to supporting infrastructure renewal projects and assured residents that every effort is being made to minimise inconvenience while the work is being carried out.
