Government Of Ghana Declines MTN’s GH¢20 Million Donation For Victims Of South African Xenophobic Attacks

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has officially declined an offer by MTN Ghana to donate GH¢20 million to support Ghanaian victims of the recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa.

In a press statement issued on August 26, 2026, the Ministry confirmed it had become aware of media reports suggesting MTN Ghana was preparing to make the donation, with the announcement attributed to an interview granted by MTN Board Chairman, Dr. Ishmael Yamson.

While commending MTN for the gesture, the Ministry stated that the Mahama Administration has made adequate provision for ongoing evacuations and reintegration of affected Ghanaians, and is therefore unable to accept the offer.

According to the statement, this position had already been directly communicated to MTN’s Board Chair and CEO when they met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, on August 14, 2026.

The Ministry reaffirmed that government remains fully committed to funding humanitarian evacuations and reintegration support for every Ghanaian brought back from harm’s way, and pledged to present a comprehensive account of the total evacuation costs to the public once the exercise concludes, in the interest of transparency and accountability.

The statement further emphasised that government will continue creating a favourable business environment for all international brands operating in Ghana, regardless of their country of origin, adding that the welfare of all Ghanaians remains its utmost priority.
