Ghana Police Raid Secret Ghetto In Accra, Arrest About 50 Nigerian Nationals Selling Their ‘Honey Pots’ To Men

The Ghana Police Service has raided a brothel in Accra, arresting approximately 50 Nigerian nationals alleged to be involved in sex work, in the latest of several similar operations carried out across the country in recent years.

Video from the scene shows a group of women being gathered and questioned following the raid. The suspects are expected to be processed and potentially arraigned, as keeping a brothel and trading in prostitution remain offences under Ghana’s Criminal Offences Act.

Raids targeting brothels with large numbers of Nigerian nationals have become a recurring feature of policing in Ghana’s major towns and cities in recent years, from Accra to Koforidua to Bolgatanga.

Notably, several past operations have uncovered evidence suggesting that some individuals found in these establishments were victims of trafficking rather than willing participants, coerced by “madams” or handlers who imposed daily earning targets and controlled their movements.

Ghana’s Immigration Service and civil society groups have repeatedly called for investigations in such raids to distinguish between voluntary sex work and trafficking, and to prosecute traffickers and brothel operators rather than solely the women found on site.

Further details on the specific brothel, the circumstances of those arrested, and whether any trafficking indicators were identified in this case have not yet been released.
