Drama in Senate as Senator Ningi Brings Dangerous Spear Into Chamber

Proceedings in the Senate on Thursday took an unusual turn when Senator Abdul Ahmed Ningi, who represents Bauchi Central Senatorial District, arrived at the National Assembly chamber carrying a spear as part of his traditional attire.

The development immediately attracted the attention of fellow lawmakers and parliamentary officials, leading to concerns about security and compliance with Senate rules regarding items permitted inside the legislative chamber.

Lawmaker Resists Calls to Remove Spear

Shortly after taking his seat, some senators and officials reportedly urged Ningi to remove the spear from the chamber.

However, the lawmaker initially resisted the requests, insisting that the item held deep personal and cultural significance that many of his colleagues did not understand.

“You people should leave it for me; you don’t know the importance of it and what it means,” Ningi reportedly told those asking him to take it away.

Senator Eventually Agrees to Comply

Following further consultations and appeals from colleagues, Ningi eventually agreed to remove the spear from the chamber.

However, he maintained that the responsibility for taking the item out rested solely with him.

The senator reportedly insisted that neither the Sergeant-at-Arms nor any other official should handle the spear, emphasizing that he would personally remove it from the legislative hall.

The decision helped calm tensions and allowed plenary proceedings to continue without further interruption.

Akpabio Reacts to Incident

Commenting on the matter during the session, Senate President Godswill Akpabio thanked Senator Ningi for complying with the directive.

Akpabio also humorously referenced another part of the senator’s traditional attire, urging him to remove what he described as an item around his neck that resembled a snake before re-entering the chamber.

The Senate President nonetheless noted that the spear could be considered a potentially dangerous object within the parliamentary environment and stressed the need to maintain safety and order during legislative proceedings.

Ningi Defends Traditional Attire

Speaking during plenary, Senator Ningi explained that the spear and other accessories formed part of a ceremonial outfit that reflected his cultural heritage.

He emphasized that the items were symbolic in nature and were not intended to threaten, intimidate or cause harm to anyone.
