BREAKING: House of Representatives Passes State Police Bill

 

The House of Representatives has approved a constitutional amendment bill seeking to establish state police across Nigeria, marking a significant step in the country’s ongoing efforts to reform its security architecture and address growing concerns over insecurity.

The proposal, which was considered during plenary on Thursday, was among several constitutional amendment bills before lawmakers. However, the House resolved to prioritise the state police legislation while deferring consideration of other proposed constitutional changes to a later legislative session.

Lawmakers Recalled for Crucial Vote

Ahead of the deliberations, the leadership of the House directed members who were away on oversight assignments and other official engagements to return to Abuja to ensure the chamber met the constitutional requirements for voting on amendment bills.

The move underscored the importance attached to the state police proposal, which has remained one of the most debated constitutional reform issues in recent years.
