BREAKING: Labour Party Ratifies Chibuzo Okereke as 2027 Presidential Candidate

The Labour Party has officially ratified Chibuzo Okereke as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections, reaffirming what it describes as its commitment to a governance model focused on citizens’ welfare and national development.

Okereke’s emergence as the party’s flagbearer follows a consensus arrangement reportedly reached by party leaders, stakeholders and members during a strategic meeting held in Abuja on May 30, 2026.

Call for Governance-Driven Leadership

Speaking after his ratification, Okereke called on Nigerians to restore confidence in the country’s future, stressing that governance rather than political ambition should remain the central focus of leadership.

He argued that effective government must prioritise the wellbeing of citizens through improved security, economic stability, social development and stronger public institutions.

“Politics should not be the purpose of government; governance should be the purpose of government,” he said.

According to him, national leadership must be directed toward improving living conditions, expanding opportunities and rebuilding trust between citizens and the state.

Okereke further stated that “when Nigerians prosper, Nigeria prospers,” adding that the people must remain at the heart of all policy decisions.

Addressing Nigeria’s Crisis of Confidence

The Labour Party candidate expressed concern over what he described as a deepening crisis of confidence among Nigerians, noting that many citizens have become disillusioned with public institutions.

He said widespread doubts about governance, accountability and fairness had weakened national unity and eroded trust in leadership.

“Nigeria suffers not only from economic, security and institutional challenges but also from a crisis of confidence,” he said. “Many Nigerians no longer believe government can work, institutions can be trusted, or merit can prevail.”

Okereke argued that past administrations had often focused more on the abstract idea of nationhood rather than the actual welfare of citizens.

People as Nigeria’s Greatest Asset

Emphasising his vision, Okereke declared that Nigeria’s most valuable resource is not its natural wealth but its people.

“Our greatest asset is not oil, minerals, land or infrastructure. Our greatest asset is our people,” he said.

He added that governance and democracy should ultimately deliver dignity, opportunity and happiness to all citizens, regardless of location or background.

Policy Priorities if Elected

Outlining his agenda, Okereke pledged that, if elected president, his administration would prioritise reforms in key sectors including education, healthcare, security and the economy.

He said his government would focus on improving productivity, expanding access to quality services and creating an environment where citizens can thrive.

According to him, national development depends on empowering individuals to become active contributors to society.

“When citizens are educated, healthy, secure, productive and empowered, the nation prospers,” he said. “But when they are neglected, divided and excluded, the nation weakens.”

Nigeria’s Challenges and Opportunities

Okereke also highlighted several pressing national challenges, including rising inflation, insecurity, unemployment, declining purchasing power, inadequate infrastructure, energy shortages, high maternal and infant mortality rates, and a growing number of out-of-school children.

Despite these difficulties, he expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future, insisting that the country has the capacity to overcome its problems through innovative thinking and strategic planning.

“These challenges are real, but they also present opportunities for transformative solutions and sustainable development,” he said.

He concluded by reaffirming his commitment to people-focused leadership, describing it as the foundation for rebuilding trust and driving national progress.
