The Catholic Church in Mozambique has been plunged into mourning following the tragic killing of Bishop Osorio Citora Afonso, a senior cleric who was recently appointed to lead the Diocese of Quelimane by Pope Leo XIV.

Bishop Afonso, 54, was found dead on Saturday at his residence in Quelimane, a city located in central Mozambique. Church authorities described the circumstances surrounding his death as mysterious, prompting widespread calls for a thorough and transparent investigation.

According to officials from Mozambique’s Criminal Investigation Service, the bishop sustained a gunshot wound to the chest. In 2023, he was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Maputo, a position that marked a significant milestone in his ecclesiastical career. His leadership and commitment to the Church earned him further recognition, leading to his appointment as a diocesan bishop the following year.

In July 2025, Pope Leo XIV transferred him to the Diocese of Quelimane, entrusting him with the spiritual leadership of one of Mozambique’s important Catholic jurisdictions. His tenure there, however, was cut tragically short by his untimely death.

As investigators continue their work, the killing has sparked concern among church members, human rights advocates, and the wider public. Many are demanding answers regarding the circumstances of the attack and urging authorities to bring those responsible to justice.
