BREAKING: Heavy Security at Presidential Villa Ahead of Protest Over Schoolchildren, Teachers Abduction

According to a report by Punch on Thursday, June 4, 2026, Abuja witnessed a heavy security lockdown on Thursday as armed security operatives took over major routes leading to the Presidential Villa ahead of a planned protest over the abduction of schoolchildren in Oyo and Borno states.

Personnel of the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), Nigerian Army, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and the Nigeria Immigration Service were deployed in large numbers around the Aso Rock area and other strategic locations in the Federal Capital Territory.

Operatives in full riot gear barricaded the main entrances to the Presidential Villa, while checkpoints were mounted along roads leading to the Federal Secretariat, National Assembly, and Supreme Court. Access to the area was restricted to individuals with valid State House identification cards, causing traffic congestion and leaving several workers and commuters stranded.

The heightened security followed a planned #OccupyAsoRock protest announced by human rights activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore. The protest, scheduled to commence from Eagle Square at 8:00 a.m., was aimed at demanding the immediate rescue of pupils and teachers abducted in Ogbomoso area of Oyo State and Askira-Uba in Borno State.

Speaking ahead of the planned demonstration, Sowore criticised the Federal Government over rising insecurity and the continued abduction of schoolchildren across the country.

“You cannot claim to be president of Nigeria and then refuse to do the job of the Commander-in-Chief. We are not here to beg anybody,” Sowore said, insisting that security operatives deployed to stop peaceful protesters should instead be protecting schools and communities from attacks.

The protest is linked to the recent abduction of 45 pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State. The attack also claimed the life of an assistant headmaster, while another teacher, Michael Oyedokun, was reportedly beheaded by the kidnappers.

The incident has triggered outrage across the country, with teachers, labour groups, and civil society organisations staging demonstrations in Ibadan and Abuja in recent days to demand urgent government action.

Despite the early morning mobilisation for the protest, no demonstrators had assembled at Eagle Square as of Thursday afternoon. However, security presence around Eagle Square, Three Arms Zone, and the Presidential Villa remained visibly tight throughout the day.
