Troost-Ekong Reveals Nwabali’s Mistake That Cost Him Super Eagles Shirt Under Chelle

Former Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong, has shared his thoughts on the situation surrounding goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, suggesting that the shot-stopper’s departure from South African club Chippa United may have contributed to his loss of the first-choice goalkeeper position in the national team.

Nwabali, who emerged as Nigeria’s undisputed number one goalkeeper following his impressive performances at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, has not featured in recent Super Eagles squads selected by head coach Eric Chelle.

His absence from the national team has fueled speculation among fans and football analysts, particularly after his contract with South African side Chippa United was terminated, leaving him without a club.

Speaking on the development, Troost-Ekong suggested that remaining at Chippa United might have been a more beneficial option for the goalkeeper, at least from a footballing perspective.

“Obviously, I can’t speak for Stanley, but based on how things have unfolded now, maybe it would have been a better decision to remain with Chippa,” the defender said.

He, however, acknowledged that outsiders may not be fully aware of the circumstances that led to the separation between Nwabali and the club.

“That’s me speaking from the outside because, of course, we don’t know what occurred between him and the club,” Troost-Ekong added.

With Nwabali currently unattached, the Super Eagles coaching crew appears to have shifted attention to Maduka Okoye, who has featured prominently in recent matches under Chelle.

Many observers believe that Nwabali’s lack of club football may have influenced the coaching staff’s decision, as national team selectors often prefer players who are actively competing at club level and maintaining match fitness.

Despite the setback, Nwabali remains one of Nigeria’s most highly-rated goalkeepers and is expected to attract interest from clubs during the ongoing transfer window. Securing a move and returning to regular competitive football could strengthen his chances of reclaiming his place in the Super Eagles setup.

The goalkeeper will now be hoping to finalize a transfer in the coming weeks as he seeks to revive his club career and re-establish himself as Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper ahead of future international assignments.
