We Earn ¢500 Daily — Less Than 10-Year-Old Children Says After Being Found Operating Galamsey Equipment 

A disturbing video has surfaced showing young children engaged in illegal artisanal gold mining, commonly known as galamsey at Achasie Pampaso in Kumasi, with the children revealing they earn as much as GH₵500 per day from the activity.

In the said video, several children some of which appears to be under ten years old, were seen operating a sluice box used to separate gold deposits from sediment, a technique commonly associated with small-scale illegal mining operations in Ghana.

The children were reportedly spotted by a man who stopped to question them. When asked how much they earned daily, they disclosed the GH₵500 figure, an amount that likely reflects the financial incentive drawing children into an activity that carries serious legal, health and developmental consequences.

The disclosure has drawn widespread shock and condemnation online, with many users questioning who is supervising the children and calling on the Ghana Police Service, the Minerals Commission, and the Department of Social Welfare to urgently investigate and intervene.
