Tragedy in Canada: Four-Year-Old Nigerian Girl Dies After Being Struck by SUV

A four-year-old Nigerian girl, Rayna Chiziterem Okoli, has died after she was struck by a vehicle in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, in a tragic incident that has left her family and community in mourning.

The fatal accident occurred on Sunday, June 14, 2026, in the McConachie neighbourhood in north Edmonton. Authorities have since launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision.

According to the Edmonton Police Service, the incident happened at approximately 5:15 p.m. near the intersection of 66 Street and 170 Avenue.

Preliminary findings indicate that Rayna was walking through a parking lot with her mother when she suddenly broke free and ran onto 66 Street, where she was struck by a Jeep travelling along the roadway.

Witnesses at the scene immediately rushed to assist the injured child and contacted emergency medical services.

Paramedics transported Rayna to Stollery Children’s Hospital, where doctors made efforts to save her life. Sadly, she later died from the injuries she sustained in the collision.

Police disclosed that the 23-year-old driver of the Jeep remained at the scene after the accident and cooperated with investigators. Authorities also stated that neither excessive speed nor driver impairment is believed to have contributed to the incident.

The Edmonton Police Service’s Major Collision Investigation Section is handling the case, and investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

Rayna’s death has devastated her family, who described the little girl as cheerful, loving and full of life.

In a heartfelt message shared through a GoFundMe campaign established to assist with funeral expenses, relatives said her sudden passing had left them heartbroken and struggling to cope with both the emotional and financial impact of the loss.

“Our hearts are shattered as we share the devastating news of the sudden passing of our precious daughter, Rayna Chiziterem Okoli,” the family wrote.

They described Rayna as “a bright, joyful, and deeply loved little girl whose presence brought warmth and happiness to everyone around her,” adding that losing her so unexpectedly had caused unimaginable grief.

The family said they are now facing the unexpected costs associated with funeral and memorial arrangements and appealed to friends, members of the Nigerian community, and compassionate well-wishers for support.

As of the latest update, the fundraising campaign had received CAD $4,925 toward its CAD $20,000 target.

The family noted that every contribution, regardless of the amount, would help them give Rayna “a peaceful and dignified farewell.”

They also encouraged those unable to make financial donations to support them by sharing the fundraising campaign and keeping the family in their thoughts and prayers during the difficult period.

The tragic loss has sparked an outpouring of sympathy from members of the Nigerian community in Canada and beyond, with many offering condolences and prayers for the grieving family as they prepare to lay the young girl to rest.
