Abuja, Nigeria — Senator Adams Oshiomhole has sharply criticized the nation’s handling of insecurity, questioning the effectiveness of government leadership and expressing frustration over what he described as a lack of accountability from the military and political authorities.
Speaking during a Senate session, Oshiomhole recalled a previous resolution passed by lawmakers directing the military high command to identify and take action against an officer allegedly linked to security lapses.
According to him, the Senate has yet to receive any official feedback on the matter. The former Edo State governor argued that the failure to respond to legislative inquiries raises concerns about transparency within the armed forces.
He stressed that institutions entrusted with protecting citizens must remain accountable to the people and their elected representatives.
Oshiomhole lamented the worsening security situation across the country, noting that kidnappings and violent attacks have continued despite repeated government interventions and parliamentary resolutions.
He described the growing trend of abductions as deeply troubling, pointing out that victims are often subjected to inhumane treatment, forced to pay ransom, and in some cases killed even after payments are made.
In a veiled criticism of Senate President Godswill Akpabio’s leadership and the government’s broader response to insecurity, Oshiomhole questioned the value of repeatedly debating the same issues without tangible results.
“If past resolutions did not change anything, why should we believe that today’s resolution will be different?” he asked, suggesting that lawmakers must move beyond routine discussions and pursue concrete actions capable of delivering real security outcomes.
The senator’s remarks reflect growing concerns within the National Assembly over the persistence of insecurity despite increased budgetary allocations to the security sector.
His comments also underscore mounting pressure on both political and military leaders to demonstrate measurable progress in addressing kidnapping, banditry, and other security threats facing Nigerians.
