I Only Came To Look For Shelter — Moment Thief Tried Convincing Area Boys After Being Caught In House Ceiling During Heavy Downpour Stealing Wires

A man believed to be a thief has been apprehended inside a residential building in Accra after he was discovered hiding in the ceiling of the structure during a heavy rainstorm.

According to eyewitnesses, the suspect had allegedly gained access to the ceiling of the house with the intention of stealing electrical wires. However, he was intercepted before he could make away with any items.

When confronted, the man offered an explanation that did little to convince those present. He claimed he had not been stealing but had merely crawled into the ceiling to seek shelter from the torrential rain that had battered parts of Accra at the time of the incident.

Residents, unconvinced by his account, detained him on the spot. Rather than handing him over to the police, those who apprehended him opted for an informal form of punishment. The suspect was compelled to scrub and clean a shop on the premises and carry out other chores as a condition of his release.

Video footage of the incident, published by UNDC Media, shows the man kneeling before a group of people, apparently explaining himself, before a second clip captures him on the floor scrubbing mud-soaked tiles in what appears to be the aftermath of the flooding.

The incident has renewed discussions about community responses to petty crime in Ghana, with some viewers questioning whether mob justice and informal punishment serve as adequate or appropriate seterrents in such situations.
