Sadio Mane Retires From International Football After 14 Years With Senegal

Senegalese football icon Sadio Mane has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to a distinguished 14-year career with the national team following Senegal’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The 34-year-old confirmed his decision in a statement published by Senegalese newspaper Le Quotidien, just days after the Lions of Teranga suffered a 3-2 defeat to Belgium in the Round of 16.

Mane leaves the international stage after making 130 appearances for Senegal, cementing his place as one of the greatest players in the country’s football history.

The former Liverpool star, who began his professional career with FC Metz before rising to global prominence, played a pivotal role in Senegal’s historic triumph at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, helping the country lift the continental title for the first time.

Reflecting on his journey with the national team, Mane expressed gratitude for the opportunity to represent his country and the unwavering support he received from fans throughout his career.

“Know that I have sacrificed everything for this flag. I have given the best of myself and have always fought fiercely for our homeland,” he said.

He also thanked Senegalese supporters for their encouragement over the years.

“Your constant support has been the driving force behind my success.”

Although he has ended his playing career with the national team, Mane indicated that he hopes to continue contributing to Senegalese football in other capacities.

“Tomorrow, it is with pleasure that I will put my experience at the service of the Nation, whether within a technical staff, on a coaching bench, or in governing bodies,” he said.

Mane’s retirement marks the end of an era for Senegal, with the forward leaving behind a legacy defined by leadership, commitment, and historic achievements that inspired a generation of footballers and supporters alike.
