Man jailed for breaking into his girlfriend’s mother’s house room to retrieve items he bought for her

A 28-year-old man, Bismark Aduah, is serving a prison sentence at the Winneba Local Prison in Ghana after he was convicted of theft for breaking into his girlfriend’s mother’s room to retrieve items he claimed to have bought for his partner.

Speaking in an interview with Crime Check, Aduah said he had been in a relationship with his girlfriend, Rebecca, for nine years, adding that the couple had lived together in Ashaiman for the past two years.

According to him, Rebecca’s mother strongly opposed their relationship and never approved of him.

Aduah explained that the incident occurred after he and Rebecca returned to her mother’s residence to recover gifts and other items he had allegedly purchased for his girlfriend during their relationship.

He admitted that they broke the door and lock to gain access to the room before taking the belongings to Rebecca’s father’s house.

Following the incident, Rebecca’s mother reported the matter to the police, accusing the pair of theft. They were subsequently arrested, charged and arraigned before the Afransi Court.

The court found Aduah guilty and sentenced him to five months’ imprisonment. In addition to the jail term, he was ordered to pay a fine of GH¢1,560.

According to Aduah, he had already spent two weeks in custody but was unable to raise the money needed to pay the fine.

Rebecca was also convicted over her involvement in the incident and sentenced to one month and two weeks in prison.

However, Aduah said he paid his girlfriend’s fine, which secured her release from custody, while he remained behind bars serving his sentence because he could not afford to pay his own fine.

The case has generated reactions on social media, with many users debating the legal implications of retrieving gifts after a relationship dispute and the consequences of taking the law into one’s own hands.
