Rapper Mystikal Sentenced To 20 Years In Prison For Raping A Woman

American rapper Mystikal, whose real name is Michael Lawrence Tyler, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to raping a woman at his Louisiana home in 2022.

The rapper, who became popular in the 1990s with songs including “Shake Ya A**,” entered a guilty plea in March to third-degree rape.

Under the agreement, his prison sentence could not exceed 20 years, which is lower than the maximum punishment for the offence.

The plea deal also meant prosecutors reduced the original first-degree rape charge, which carries a mandatory life sentence if convicted.

A few days before he was due to be sentenced, Mystikal tried to withdraw his guilty plea.

The rapper told the court that he had been under intense emotional stress and pressure when he accepted the deal and did not fully understand the long-term consequences of his decision.

However, the judge rejected his request, allowing the sentencing to go ahead.

During the hearing on Tuesday, the victim, whose identity has not been made public, asked the court to impose the maximum sentence.

She spoke about the trauma she experienced, testifying that Mystikal punched her, strangled her, forcibly ripped out her braids, and raped her.

The woman also accused him of confiscating her phone and car keys to trap her inside the home, and of using her device to transfer money to himself before finally releasing her.

Mystikal responded by saying, “If I did that to you, I deserve the maximum sentence.”

The rapper has remained in custody at the Ascension Parish jail since he was arrested in 2022 and was denied bail throughout the case.

This is not the first time Mystikal has faced serious legal issues. In 2017, he was charged with rape and kidnapping in another case.

The rapper spent about 18 months in jail before prosecutors eventually dropped those charges.
