Police Deny Sunday Igboho’s Role in Alleged Release of Kidnap Victims in Oyo

The Oyo State Police Command has dismissed reports claiming that Yoruba activist, Sunday Adeyemo, was responsible for the alleged release of kidnapped victims in Igboho, Oorelope Local Government Area of the state.

The command stated that there was no official confirmation that the victims had been rescued and no evidence linking Igboho to any operation that led to their freedom.

The clarification followed reports and viral videos circulating online which suggested that a kidnapped woman, her children, and a sibling were released shortly after Igboho issued a two-hour ultimatum to suspected kidnappers operating in the area.

Reacting to the claims, the police said the reports remained unverified and urged members of the public to rely on confirmed information from security agencies.

“The Nigeria Police Force has officially debunked claims that the hostages have been safely released,” the command stated.

The police added that the Oyo State Commissioner of Police had not confirmed any involvement of Igboho in the matter or any rescue mission.

Earlier, Igboho had appeared in viral videos condemning the rising cases of kidnapping in the area, accusing criminal elements of turning the community into a hotspot for abductions.

He warned those allegedly protecting the perpetrators and demanded that the victims be released.

The abduction reportedly followed a night attack in the Igboho area, after which the kidnappers allegedly demanded a ransom of ₦300 million before reducing it to ₦150 million.

The situation became more tense following reports that a pregnant woman and a person who reportedly delivered ransom money were killed during the incident.

However, the Police Public Relations Officer in Oyo State, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, described claims about the rescue as “unsubstantiated” and advised the public to wait for official updates.

The command assured residents that security agencies were continuing efforts to address criminal activities and ensure the safety of communities across the state.
