Photo News: Tears As Slain Army Major General Laid to Rest in Katsina

Retired Major General Abubakar Rabe, who died while in the custody of his abductors two weeks after being kidnapped by bandits, has been laid to rest in Katsina State.

The late senior military officer was buried on Saturday in accordance with Islamic rites, as mourners gathered in large numbers to pay their final respects to a man widely regarded as a dedicated patriot who spent decades serving Nigeria in various capacities within the Armed Forces.

The funeral atmosphere was marked by deep emotion, with Qur’anic recitations echoing across the burial ground as prayers were offered for the repose of his soul. Many attendees struggled to contain their grief, describing his death as a painful tragedy, particularly given his long-standing commitment to the defence and security of the nation.

Several mourners noted the irony that a man who devoted much of his life to protecting Nigerians ultimately became a victim of the insecurity that continues to plague parts of the country.

Residents of Katsina metropolis also expressed shock over the circumstances surrounding his death, lamenting the growing security challenges confronting communities across the country.

Speaking during the burial, Dr Sama’ila Balarabe described the late general’s passing as a significant loss to both his family and the state.

“This is a painful loss, not just to the family but to the entire state,” he said.

“He served this country faithfully, yet he died in such circumstances.”

Major General Rabe, a former military spokesperson and senior officer of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, was abducted alongside his wife by armed bandits on May 30 along the Marabar Musawa–Kafinsoli Road in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State.

Reacting to the development, the Defence Headquarters paid tribute to the deceased officer, describing him as a committed soldier who made substantial contributions to Nigeria’s counter-insurgency efforts during his years of service.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the military said the late general’s dedication to duty, professionalism and commitment to national unity would remain a source of inspiration for serving and future personnel of the Armed Forces.

The Defence Headquarters also assured Nigerians that security agencies were intensifying efforts to track down those responsible for the abduction and death of the retired officer, while continuing operations aimed at dismantling terrorist and criminal networks across the country.

Meanwhile, the death of the retired general has sparked widespread reactions from Nigerians, many of whom have renewed calls for stronger measures to address the worsening security situation and protect citizens from violent criminal groups.
