Peter Obi Recounts How Schoolgirl Challenged Him Over Unfulfilled Promise as Governor

Former Anambra State Governor and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has shared a memorable experience from his time in office when a young schoolgirl publicly confronted him over a promise that had not been fulfilled.

Obi recounted the incident during an interview with Advocacy For Good Governance, using the story to emphasize the importance of accountability, transparency and responsiveness in leadership.

According to the former governor, the encounter occurred during one of the interactive town hall meetings organized by his administration to encourage direct engagement between government officials and members of the public.

The forum was designed to provide citizens with an opportunity to ask questions, raise concerns and hold public officials accountable for government actions and policies.

A Question That Changed the Atmosphere

Obi explained that the meeting took an unexpected turn when a student from a junior secondary school was given the opportunity to speak.

Rather than asking a routine question, the young girl directly challenged him about promises she believed had not been fulfilled.

According to Obi, the bold question immediately changed the atmosphere in the hall, drawing the attention of everyone present.

“I was at a town hall meeting when a young girl raised her hand to speak. I called on her to ask her question in front of everyone. She looked at me and asked why I make promises that I don’t keep,” he recalled.

The former governor said the question created a moment of silence among participants, as many people waited to hear how he would respond to the criticism.

Investigating the Complaint

Rather than dismissing the concern or treating it lightly, Obi said he decided to investigate the matter to understand exactly what the student was referring to.

His inquiries later revealed that there had been a commitment to carry out repairs and improvements at the girl’s school, but the project had not been completed as expected.

Upon discovering the issue, Obi said he immediately directed that action be taken to address the outstanding work and ensure that the promised improvements were carried out.

“I found out there was a promise made about repairs and improvements in her school that had not been done. I immediately asked that steps be taken to fix the issue,” he said.

Lesson in Accountability

Obi noted that the experience left a lasting impression on him because it demonstrated that citizens closely monitor the actions of their leaders, regardless of age.

According to him, the incident served as a reminder that public officials must remain accountable and be willing to accept criticism from any source if they are genuinely committed to serving the people.

He argued that effective leadership requires humility, openness and a readiness to correct mistakes whenever shortcomings are identified.

“That moment stayed with me because it showed how closely citizens, even children, watch leaders,” he stated.

‘Leaders Must Accept Correction’

The former Labour Party presidential candidate further stressed that accountability goes beyond making promises and involves ensuring that commitments made to citizens are fulfilled.

He maintained that leaders who remain connected to the people are more likely to understand the real challenges facing communities and respond appropriately.

“Leaders must be ready to accept correction no matter who it comes from. Accountability means making sure promises to the people are carried out.

“If leaders stay close to the people, they will understand the real problems better. Trust in government grows when leaders do what they say they will do,” Obi added.
