NFF to Honour Alex Iwobi for 100th Super Eagles Appearance Against Portugal
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) will honour midfielder Alex Iwobi ahead of Wednesday night’s international friendly against Portugal as he prepares to make his 100th appearance for the Super Eagles.
The Fulham star is set to become only the fourth player in Nigeria’s football history to reach the remarkable milestone of 100 caps for the national team when he takes to the pitch at the Estádio Dr. Magalhães Pessoa in Leiria.
To commemorate the achievement, the NFF is expected to present Iwobi with a special plaque before kick-off, recognizing his decade-long contribution to Nigerian football.
The milestone places the 30-year-old among an elite group of Super Eagles legends. Only former captain Joseph Yobo, former goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama, and current forward Ahmed Musa have previously reached the century mark in appearances for the three-time African champions.
Iwobi’s international career began in October 2015 when he made his debut for Nigeria in a friendly match against the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Over the years, he has grown into one of the most dependable figures in the national team, earning praise for his versatility, creativity, and consistency in midfield.
Since his debut, Iwobi has featured prominently in several Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, World Cup qualification campaigns, and international friendlies, becoming a key figure in successive generations of the Super Eagles squad.
Heading into the Portugal encounter, the midfielder has registered 10 goals and eight assists in 99 appearances, underlining his influence both as a creator and goal contributor for the national side.
The friendly match against Portugal provides an ideal stage for Iwobi to celebrate a significant personal achievement while continuing to add to his legacy in Nigerian football.
