Mr Macaroni abandons activism, blames Nigerians

Prominent Nigerian actor and social rights crusader Debo Adebayo, popularly known as Mr Macaroni, has officially declared a hiatus from political activism, stating he is exhausted by continuous threats and the hostile apathy of the very citizens he has been fighting for.

Reacting to a resurfaced Wazobia FM interview on Wednesday, the entertainer took to X to explain his sudden withdrawal from government criticism. Adebayo cited intense physical threats dating back to the 2020 #EndSARS protests and a profound frustration with Nigerians who quickly adapt to terrible governance instead of demanding accountability.

The comedian did not mince words regarding his stance on the current administration, referencing a prior statement from March 2026 where he labeled President Bola Tinubu’s tenure as “the Most Useless Government in the history of Useless Governments.” However, he stated that continuously repeating himself has become an exercise in futility while a small fraction of politicians brazenly ruin the lives of over 200 million citizens without any real resistance.

“My issue with us as Nigerians is how we move on quickly. We complain and move on,” Adebayo wrote. “Until we as a people are ready to fight for what is ours, saying the same thing over and over again is just TIRING.”

The actor’s withdrawal highlights a brutal reality for frontline activists in Nigeria: the psychological toll of fighting for a populace that often turns against its own defenders. Adebayo recounted how his advocacy during the 2023 elections, where he simply urged citizens to vote wisely and endorsed his preferred candidate, resulted in a barrage of public insults and curses from fellow Nigerians.

He diagnosed this civic dysfunction as a “survival mentality,” arguing that as long as citizens remain trapped in a daily scramble merely to survive, they will never unite to demand an enabling environment for success. It is a sobering editorial on the state of the Nigerian electorate—one that frequently vilifies the “troublesome” voices demanding systemic change while submitting to the politicians causing the hardship.

The personal cost of this advocacy has also been severe. Adebayo disclosed that during the peak of the #EndSARS movement, the threats to his life were so intense that his traumatized family repeatedly begged him to flee the country.

Despite his retreat from the political frontline, Adebayo firmly dismissed any speculation that he intends to join politics, noting how the political arena has ruined the legacies of people he once admired.
