Minister For Local Gov’t Joins Ayalolo Passengers As Contra-flow System Begins In Accra

Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, has joined passengers on an Ayalolo bus as the much-anticipated contra-flow system begins on selected roads in Accra.

In a video circulating online, the minister is seen standing among passengers inside the bus and interacting with them in a relaxed manner, appearing to experience the service alongside ordinary commuters.

The move comes as the government rolls out the new traffic arrangement aimed at improving the movement of Ayalolo buses during peak hours and reducing the time commuters spend in traffic.

The contra-flow system officially begins on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, and covers the Amasaman–Accra, Adenta–Accra and Kasoa–Accra corridors. It will operate from 6:00am to 9:00am in the morning and from 4:00pm to 8:00pm in the evening.

Under the arrangement, designated sections of the roads will allow authorised Ayalolo buses to travel against the normal flow of traffic in the direction of heavy commuter movement.

The designated lanes are strictly reserved for Ayalolo buses, while private vehicles, taxis, trotros and other unauthorised vehicles are not allowed to use them during the operational periods. The Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) will also assist with traffic control and enforcement.

Mahama Ayariga has previously said the initiative is intended to make public transport more reliable and encourage some private car owners to switch to buses during peak hours.
