Lagos Police Reveals Cause Of Mushing Explosion

The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed that the recent explosion in the Mushin area of Lagos was not caused by an improvised explosive device (IED), terrorism, sabotage or any other criminal act.

In an update issued on Thursday, the command disclosed that a comprehensive forensic and technical investigation established that the incident resulted from the failure of a pressurised mechanical component rather than the use of explosives.

According to the police, investigators found no evidence linking the explosion to any form of terrorist activity or criminal operation.

The command said forensic experts detected no traces of explosive materials, detonators, initiation systems, explosive residues or blast patterns typically associated with bomb attacks.

“The investigation has conclusively established that the incident was not caused by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), terrorist activity, sabotage, or any form of criminal use of explosives,” the statement read.

It added, “Technical findings revealed no traces of explosive materials, detonators, initiation systems, explosive residues, or blast characteristics ordinarily associated with explosive attacks.”

The police explained that the incident was triggered by the catastrophic failure of a pressurised mechanical component located outside the affected vehicle.

According to investigators, the failure caused a sudden release of energy that shattered the front passenger-side glass panels of the vehicle.

The command noted that the explosion resulted in only minor injuries to the vehicle’s occupant, with no indication of any malicious intent behind the incident.

“Investigation established that the incident resulted from the catastrophic failure of a pressurised mechanical component outside the vehicle,” the police stated.

“This failure generated a sudden release of energy which caused the shattering of the vehicle’s front passenger-side glass panels and resulted in minor injuries to the occupant.”

Based on the findings, the police said the incident has been professionally classified as a mechanical explosion, bringing to an end speculations that the blast may have been caused by an explosive device or a deliberate attack.

The command reassured residents that there is no security threat connected to the incident and urged members of the public to disregard rumours linking the explosion to terrorism or other criminal activities.

Police authorities also reiterated their commitment to conducting thorough investigations into incidents of public concern and providing accurate information to prevent misinformation and unnecessary panic.
