KNUST Campus Completely Submerges, Students Warned To Stay Indoors As Wiwi River Overflows Following Heavy Downpour

Parts of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) campus in Kumasi have been submerged in floodwaters on Thursday morning after the Wiwi River burst its banks following heavy overnight and early morning rainfall.

The flooding, captured in footage circulated on social media by EDHUB, shows thick brown floodwaters inundating roads and surrounding areas on the campus, with a bus visibly stranded in the rising waters as movement on the affected routes came to a standstill.

According to reports, the worst-hit areas include Mecca Road and the Casely Hayford zone,  among the busiest and most populated sections of the KNUST campus where floodwaters rendered roads impassable and disrupted the normal flow of academic and residential life.

The Wiwi River, which runs through portions of the KNUST campus, is known to overflow during periods of intense rainfall, a recurring challenge that residents and students have raised concerns about over the years.

At the time of reporting, there were no confirmed accounts of casualties or injuries. However, the extent of damage to property, infrastructure, and parked vehicles in the affected areas had not yet been fully assessed.
