Kano Approves ₦1.5bn for Mass Wedding of 1,500 Couples, Offers Dowries and Business Grants

The Kano State Government has approved the sum of ₦1.5 billion for a mass wedding programme that will cater to 1,500 couples across the state, a move officials say is aimed at supporting vulnerable residents and strengthening family stability.

The announcement was made on Monday by Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa, who disclosed that preparations for the large-scale exercise were already at an advanced stage.

According to Daurawa, the initiative forms part of the state government’s social welfare interventions designed to assist low-income individuals who may be unable to afford the financial requirements associated with marriage.

Medical Screening Mandatory for Participants

The Hisbah chief explained that all intending couples would undergo comprehensive medical examinations before being cleared for the programme.

The screenings will include tests for HIV, hepatitis, pregnancy, and genotype compatibility to ensure that participants are medically fit and adequately informed before entering into marriage.

He noted that the health checks are intended to promote responsible family planning and help reduce avoidable health complications, particularly those associated with inherited blood disorders.

₦1 Million Support Package Per Couple

Daurawa revealed that the government plans to spend approximately ₦1 million on each couple participating in the programme.

According to him, the support package will include essential household items needed to establish a new home, such as beds, mattresses, bedsheets, pillows, furniture, and food supplies.

In addition, each bride is expected to receive a dowry of ₦100,000, while another ₦100,000 will be provided as startup capital to encourage small-scale entrepreneurship and help beneficiaries become financially self-reliant after marriage.

Part of Governor Yusuf’s Campaign Promise

The Hisbah commander stated that Abba Kabir Yusuf approved the ₦1.5 billion allocation in fulfilment of a campaign pledge to support mass marriage initiatives and provide assistance to economically disadvantaged residents.

He explained that the programme is intended to help eligible couples formalise their unions through a structured government-supported process.

While the exact date for the wedding ceremony has not yet been announced, Daurawa said the government is finalising logistical arrangements and beneficiary selection procedures before unveiling the timetable.

New Marriage and Divorce Guidelines

Beyond the mass wedding initiative, the Hisbah Corps disclosed that it has introduced measures aimed at promoting stable family relationships.

According to Daurawa, couples are being encouraged to seek counselling and engage with relevant authorities before pursuing divorce proceedings.

He also reiterated the importance of genotype testing before marriage, describing it as a critical step in reducing the prevalence of sickle cell-related health challenges among future generations.

Public Reactions and Debate

The announcement has sparked widespread discussion across Kano and beyond, with many residents welcoming the intervention as a lifeline for low-income individuals seeking to marry.

Others, however, have questioned the timing and scale of the expenditure, citing pressing socioeconomic concerns such as unemployment, poverty, insecurity, and the welfare needs of vulnerable populations, including the Almajiri community.

Despite the differing views, state officials insist that the programme is designed to promote social stability, strengthen family structures, and provide practical support to residents struggling with the rising cost of living.

If implemented as planned, the initiative will rank among the largest government-sponsored mass wedding programmes in Nigeria in recent years, reflecting Kano State’s continued use of social intervention schemes as part of its broader welfare strategy.
