Mob Burns Tricycle, Vigilantes Rescue Three Suspected Phone Thieves From Lynching in Jos

Tension erupted around Zololo Junction in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State on Monday after an angry crowd set ablaze a tricycle allegedly used by suspected phone thieves operating in the area.

The incident, which occurred at about 12:20 p.m., drew a large crowd after a victim reportedly raised an alarm, accusing the suspects of stealing mobile phones and other valuables.

According to eyewitnesses, residents quickly mobilised and apprehended three suspects, including a woman, believed to be connected to a series of theft incidents that have recently plagued commuters and residents in the area.

The situation nearly turned deadly as some enraged youths attempted to attack the suspects. However, members of a local vigilante group intervened promptly, preventing a possible mob killing.

The vigilantes succeeded in rescuing the suspects from the crowd and escorted them to their office for safety before subsequently handing them over to the police for further investigation.

Witnesses said the tricycle allegedly used by the suspects was set on fire by the mob during the chaos.

Residents who gathered at the scene expressed frustration over what they described as a growing wave of phone thefts and robberies involving tricycles in parts of Jos North.

Many claimed that criminals had increasingly targeted unsuspecting passengers and pedestrians, especially during early morning and evening hours.

Speaking on the development, a resident of Zololo, Mr. Isa Bello, said the arrest brought relief to many members of the community who had become worried about the rising incidents of theft.

“Some persons suspected to be phone thieves were attacking people and collecting phones and money, and today they were caught. We thank God for that,” he said.

According to Bello, residents had repeatedly complained about criminal activities in the area, with victims reportedly losing mobile phones, laptops, cash, and other valuables to suspected thieves.

“This was not the first time they had been terrorising the area. They operated in the early mornings, afternoons, and late evenings, dispossessing residents of their belongings,” he added.

The incident has once again highlighted concerns over rising street crime in parts of Plateau State, with residents calling on security agencies to strengthen surveillance and patrols in identified hotspots.

As of the time of filing this report, police authorities had not issued an official statement on the arrests. However, investigations are expected to determine the suspects’ involvement in the alleged crimes and whether they are connected to other reported theft cases in the area.

Authorities have repeatedly warned against jungle justice, urging residents to hand over suspects to law enforcement agencies rather than taking the law into their own hands.
