JUST-IN: INEC Announces New Date for Rivers South-East Senatorial By-Election

According to a report by Vanguard on Thursday 21st May 2026, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed June 20, 2026, for the conduct of a by-election to fill the vacant Rivers South-East Senatorial District seat in Rivers State.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Johnson Alalibo, disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday in Port Harcourt; He stated that voting will hold from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. across all polling units within the senatorial district.

The commission explained that the exercise will cover:

88 registration areas (wards)

1,629 polling units

Seven local government areas: Andoni, Opobo/Nkoro, Eleme, Tai, Oyigbo, Khana, and Gokana

These areas collectively form the Rivers South-East Senatorial District, where eligible voters are expected to participate in selecting a new senator.

INEC said preparations are ongoing to ensure a smooth and credible election process; According to the REC, the commission is committed to maintaining transparency, professionalism, and adherence to electoral guidelines throughout the exercise.

He also urged political stakeholders, party supporters, and residents to maintain peace before, during, and after the by-election. Security agencies are expected to play a key role in ensuring order during the poll.
