Islamic New Year: Sultan gives fresh order to Muslims nationwide

The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has asked Muslims across Nigeria to look out for the new moon of Muharram 1448AH.

The sighting of the moon will determine the beginning of the Islamic New Year.

The announcement was made in a statement issued by Prof. Sambo Wali Junaidu, Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs of the Sultanate Council, Sokoto.

According to the statement, Monday, June 15, 2026, which is the 29th day of Zulhijjah 1447AH, has been set aside for Muslims across the country to search for the Muharram crescent moon after sunset.

The Sultan urged Muslims who see the new moon to report it through the proper traditional channels. He said verified sightings should be reported to the nearest District Head or Village Head, who will then forward the information to the Sultanate Council and the Sultan.

The statement explained that moon sighting is an important religious practice used to determine the start of a new Islamic month.

Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar and is regarded as one of Islam’s four sacred months. The beginning of Muharram marks the start of a new Islamic year and helps determine the dates of major Islamic events and religious observances.
