‘I Use My Roles to Expose Society’s ills’ — Patience Ozokwor Explains Why She Often Plays Wicked Characters

Veteran Nollywood actress Patience Ozokwor, widely known as Mama G, has opened up on why she is frequently cast in films as a wicked or troublesome character, saying her roles are deliberately chosen to reflect real-life societal issues.

In a video shared on her Instagram page, the acclaimed actress explained that her performances are not intended to promote negative behaviour but to highlight the hidden problems that exist within communities and families.

According to her, many of the storylines she portrays on screen are inspired by real-life experiences that people often prefer to ignore or avoid discussing openly. She noted that her goal has always been to bring such issues into the spotlight through storytelling.

Ozokwor said she embraced these kinds of roles because she believes film is a powerful tool for social awareness and behavioural change. By acting out difficult or controversial characters, she said she is able to draw attention to consequences that arise from certain actions in society.

The actress emphasized that she has never seen her career as an avenue for glorifying wrongdoing, but rather as a platform for exposing social ills and encouraging reflection among viewers.

She added that she takes pride in the impact her work has made over the years and expressed gratitude to her fans who continue to support her despite the often negative roles she plays on screen.

“I felt bold to expose the ills of society. These things happen, and nobody wants to expose them, so I’m exposing them. So I’m extremely proud of myself and Mama G lovers,” she said.

Patience Ozokwor remains one of Nollywood’s most recognizable figures, with a career spanning decades and a reputation for delivering strong performances in both comedic and dramatic roles. Her ability to embody villainous characters has made her a household name and a defining figure in the Nigerian film industry.

Industry observers note that her comments further highlight the role of cinema in reflecting societal realities and shaping public conversations around morality, family dynamics, and social behaviour.
