‘Heaven Forbid You End Up With A Guy Who Hasn’t Blown’ – Toke Makinwa

Nigerian media personality and actress Toke Makinwa has shared her thoughts on relationships and financial compatibility, advising people to date partners within their economic class to avoid unnecessary pressure and disappointment.

The television host made the remarks during a recent episode of the MENtality Podcast, hosted by media personality Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, where she discussed the role of money in modern relationships and marriages.

Speaking on the challenges that often arise when there is a significant financial gap between partners, Makinwa argued that relationships tend to be more stable when both individuals have similar financial realities and expectations.

According to her, many relationship problems stem from people pursuing partners whose lifestyles they cannot realistically sustain, a situation she believes creates avoidable tension and unrealistic expectations.

Makinwa particularly addressed men who, in her view, overlook women within their financial bracket in pursuit of women with more expensive lifestyles, only to later accuse women of being overly materialistic.

She maintained that many men fail to appreciate loyal and supportive partners who stand by them during difficult financial periods, choosing instead to chase relationships that place additional financial burdens on them.

“I am a big believer in dating within your age and within your class. That way there will not be stories that touch. You will have a good girl at home, a girl who will even make dinner with her own money when you don’t have. Yet, some men will still want to cheat on her with a woman they can’t afford,” she said.

The actress also reflected on how financial success can influence relationships, especially when one partner experiences a dramatic change in fortune.

According to Makinwa, some women become fearful after watching men who were once financially struggling transform their behaviour once they attain wealth and success.

“Heaven forbid you end up with a guy who hasn’t blown. The day he blows, that is when you will know his true personality. And that scares women,” she stated.

She further argued that money does not fundamentally change a person’s character but rather reveals who they truly are.

“Money doesn’t change people; it just reveals who the person is. So many men are treating women who sacrificed everything for them badly,” she added.

Her comments have since sparked conversations on social media, with many users debating whether financial compatibility should be considered a major factor when choosing a life partner. While some agreed that couples with similar financial backgrounds often experience fewer conflicts over money, others argued that genuine love, mutual respect and commitment should matter more than economic status in sustaining a healthy relationship.
