Gunmen kill three security operatives in attack on NIPSS

The Plateau State Police Command has confirmed the killing of three security operatives during an attack by armed gunmen on the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, in the early hours of Tuesday.

The incident, which has raised fresh concerns about security around critical national institutions, occurred at Nigeria’s foremost policy and leadership training centre located in Kuru, near Jos.

Confirming the attack in a statement issued on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Plateau State Command, SP Alfred Alabo, described the incident as unfortunate and disclosed that three security personnel lost their lives while on duty.

“The Plateau State Police Command, on a very sad note, wishes to confirm the incident that occurred in the early hours of today, 16th June 2026, involving security personnel on duty at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, NIPSS, Kuru,” the statement read.

“Regrettably, three security personnel lost their lives during the incident.”

Although the police did not immediately provide details on the identities of the victims or the circumstances surrounding the attack, the command said security measures had been significantly strengthened around the institution and its surrounding communities.

According to SP Alabo, Plateau State Commissioner of Police, CP Bassey Ewah, has ordered the deployment of additional security personnel to the area while surveillance and patrol operations had been intensified to prevent further security breaches.

“Security reinforcements have been deployed, and patrols have been intensified around the general area by the Commissioner of Police, CP Bassey Ewah,” the police spokesperson stated.

The command also sought to reassure residents and members of the NIPSS community that the situation had been brought under control and that normal activities had resumed.

“The situation is under control and normal activities have resumed,” the statement added.

Police authorities said investigations into the attack were ongoing, with efforts focused on identifying and apprehending those responsible.

The command urged residents to remain calm, cooperate with security agencies, and continue with their lawful activities while security operatives carry out their duties.

NIPSS Kuru is widely regarded as Nigeria’s premier institution for policy development, strategic leadership and training of senior public officials. The attack represents one of the most significant security incidents recorded at the institution in recent years.
