GES condemns assault on Bawku SHS teachers, vows sanctions

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has denounced the attack on two teachers and the vandalism of property at Bawku Senior High School in the Upper East Region.

The incident took place on Monday, June 15, 2026, when some students allegedly became violent following the strict enforcement of examination regulations during the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

Two teachers sustained injuries, and several school properties were also damaged.

In a statement released on Wednesday, June 17, GES characterised the behaviour as unacceptable, unjustifiable, and inconsistent with the principles of discipline, respect, and integrity that form the foundation of Ghana’s education system.

“Management views attacks on teachers in the course of their official duties as a serious breach of school discipline and a threat to the safety of staff of the Service,” the statement said.

The Service confirmed that security personnel have since been dispatched to the school to restore order, with academic and examination activities proceeding under enhanced security measures.

The affected teachers are currently receiving medical attention and support.

GES further revealed that a comprehensive investigation is in progress in collaboration with security agencies to identify all individuals involved.

It emphasised that anyone found guilty will face the full extent of the law as well as internal disciplinary actions.

The Service reiterated its commitment to ensuring safety, discipline, and stability across all educational institutions in the country.
