Democracy Day: FG announces committment to building stronger Nigeria

The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to building a stronger Nigeria for present and future generations.

This assurance was given by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, during the 27th Democracy Day celebration.

Speaking on Friday, June 5, 2026, after the Juma’at service in Abuja, Idris described the occasion — marked annually on June 12 — as a reminder that Nigeria’s progress, unity, and stability depend not only on good governance but also on the prayers and support of its citizens.

“Democracy Day is also an opportunity to celebrate the strength of our democratic institutions and the collective commitment of Nigerians to constitutional rule.

“Twenty-seven years of uninterrupted democratic governance testify to the resilience of our democracy and the determination of our people to uphold democratic values.

“Under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, the Federal Government remains committed to strengthening democratic governance, promoting national unity, and addressing the challenges confronting our nation,” Idris said.

Idris called on all Nigerians to actively support the democratic process by reflecting on the sacrifices of the nation’s heroes, particularly Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola.

He noted that June 12 symbolises Abiola’s courage, resilience, and commitment to the will of the people — values that remain enduring symbols of Nigeria’s democratic journey.

“As we celebrate Democracy Day, let us renew our commitment to unity, peaceful coexistence and responsible citizenship,” the minister said.

“Nigeria’s strength lies in our diversity, and our future depends on our ability to work together in the interest of our nation. Let us continue to reject division, embrace dialogue and promote values that strengthen our democracy and foster national cohesion.

“Together, we can build a stronger, more prosperous and united Nigeria for present and future generations.

“May God Almighty continue to bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria, guide our leaders, protect our security personnel, and grant our nation enduring peace, unity and prosperity,” he added.
