Corruption Trial: El-Rufai appears in Court as legal battle deepens

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, on Monday returned to the Federal High Court in Kaduna as proceedings continued in the corruption case filed against him by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

El-Rufai arrived at the court premises accompanied by officials of the anti-corruption agency and security personnel from the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police Force. The presence of security operatives reflected the high-profile nature of the case, which has attracted significant public attention.

The court session is expected to focus on legal arguments and applications submitted by both the prosecution and the defence as the trial enters another stage. Lawyers representing both sides are expected to present their positions before the court decides on the next steps in the case.

The ICPC is prosecuting the former governor over allegations of abuse of office, fraud, and financial misconduct linked to projects executed during his administration in Kaduna State. According to investigators, public funds were allegedly released for certain projects that were either not carried out as approved or were managed in ways that violated established government procedures.

The anti-corruption agency maintains that its investigation uncovered irregularities in the handling of public resources during El-Rufai’s tenure as governor. Prosecutors are expected to rely on documents, financial records, and witness testimonies to support their claims before the court.

However, El-Rufai has consistently denied all allegations against him. The former governor insists that he acted within the law throughout his time in office and has maintained that he is innocent of the charges brought against him.
