CAF president Motsepe praises Omar Artan’s rise in world football

Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Dr Patrice Motsepe has praised Somali referee Omar Artan following his historic achievements in international football, describing his success as a moment of pride for Somalia and the entire African continent.

Artan has become one of the most recognised referees from Africa after earning major appointments on the international stage.

His progress has been highlighted by his selection as the CAF Men’s Referee of the Year 2025 and his appointment to officiate at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, even though Artan was refused entry into the United States, a co-host of the 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside Canada and Mexico.

Dr Motsepe said Artan’s achievements are a reflection of his ability, consistency and the respect he has gained from football authorities around the world.

“Omar Artan has made Somalia and the entire African continent extremely proud,” Motsepe said.

“His CAF Men’s Referee of the Year 2025 award and his appointment to the FIFA World Cup 2026 are a recognition of his world-class refereeing ability and the international respect he enjoys.”

Artan’s rise represents a significant milestone for Somali football and African refereeing. For many years, African officials have worked to gain greater recognition in global competitions, and Artan’s achievements are seen as evidence of the continent’s growing influence in football officiating.

The CAF president also expressed his appreciation to UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin for helping make another major opportunity possible for the Somali referee.

Artan has been appointed to officiate the 2026 UEFA Super Cup, a prestigious match involving Europe’s top club champions.

“I am grateful to my friend Aleksander Čeferin for enabling him to officiate the UEFA Super Cup 2026,” Motsepe added.

The CAF president described the appointment as an important achievement not only for Artan but also for referees across Africa.

“This is a great honour for Omar Artan and African referees, and a strong example of football uniting Africa, Europe, and the world,” he said.
