Archbishop Funso Awe, a retired Church Father, human rights activist, and social commentator, has said that the proposed Obi/Kwankwaso ticket under the NDC does not present a strong challenge to the ruling party, citing Rabiu Kwankwaso’s current political standing in Kano State.

In an interview with DAILY INDEPENDENT on Sunday, May 24, 2026, Awe noted that Kwankwaso is currently experiencing political setbacks in Kano, adding that his influence in the state may no longer be as strong as it once was. He observed that although Kwankwaso still retains support among the grassroots, commonly referred to as “Talakawas,” his overall political dominance has diminished.

Awe further explained that the emergence of an APC-aligned governor in Kano, alongside the continued influence of former governor Abdullahi Ganduje, has contributed to a shift in the state’s political balance, thereby weakening Kwankwaso’s leverage.
