Blessing Nze Obasi Speaks on Backlash From Christians Over Lesbian Inmate Role in Blood Sisters

Nollywood actress Blessing Nze Obasi has opened up about the criticism she received from some Christians after portraying a lesbian inmate in the second season of the popular television series Blood Sisters.

The actress shared her experience during an interview with Yanga FM, where she addressed concerns raised by some viewers who questioned her decision to accept the role despite her Christian faith.

According to Obasi, many critics failed to distinguish between her professional responsibilities as an actress and her personal beliefs and values.

She explained that acting requires performers to embody different characters and tell diverse stories, many of which may not reflect their real-life lifestyles, convictions, or experiences.

The actress noted that the controversial role was based on realities that exist within society and certain correctional facilities, stressing that the storyline was intended to portray real-life situations rather than promote any particular lifestyle.

Obasi said the production team approached the subject carefully and responsibly, ensuring that the portrayal remained focused on storytelling rather than advocacy.

She maintained that the series sought to highlight circumstances that occur in prison environments while preserving the broader message and themes of the show.

Reflecting on the backlash she faced, the actress revealed that some Christians strongly condemned her participation in the project and questioned how a believer could accept such a character.

“We are telling a real story about things that truly happen,” she said.

“The Christians came for me and attacked me. They asked, ‘As a child of God, how would you take such a role?’”

Defending her decision, Obasi explained that the role was part of a larger narrative designed to depict realities within prison settings.

She emphasized that neither she nor the production company intended to endorse same-sex relationships through the storyline.

“I told them we are telling real stories about what happens in prison. The production company was sensitive enough not to depict the more disturbing aspects of it,” she explained.

According to the actress, the filmmakers focused on presenting the story in a balanced manner while avoiding sensationalism.

She added that the series contains several positive themes and messages that she chose to focus on despite the criticism generated by her character.

“They are not supporting it; they are simply telling the story. There is so much positivity in the production, and I chose to focus my mind on that,” she said.

Obasi’s comments have reignited discussions about artistic freedom, storytelling, and the challenges actors face when portraying controversial characters.
