Benue Gov Alia Commends Senate Over Passage of State Police Bill

Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, has hailed the National Assembly for passing the State Police Bill, describing the move as a significant step towards strengthening security and tackling insecurity across the country.

In a statement issued on Thursday by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Tersoo Kula, the governor said the legislation, which seeks to establish state police formations alongside the Nigeria Police Force, marks a major breakthrough in efforts to improve the nation’s security architecture.

Alia, a long-time advocate of state policing, said decentralising law enforcement would enhance security operations and provide better protection for lives and property.

According to him, the House of Representatives had earlier approved the bill, while the Senate’s concurrence underscores the determination of federal lawmakers to address the country’s security challenges.

The governor noted that state police would have a better understanding of local communities, cultures and terrain, enabling faster and more effective responses to emerging security threats.

He also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for demonstrating leadership and commitment to reforms aimed at improving Nigeria’s security framework.

Alia said the issue of state policing has remained a key topic in national discussions and expressed optimism that the legislation would contribute significantly to improving public safety.

He assured residents of Benue State that his administration would continue to prioritise security and support initiatives geared towards promoting peace, stability and sustainable development in the state and across the country.
