Why we postponed 2026 WAFCON – CAF

The Confederation of African Football, CAF, has explained why the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, WAFCON, was postponed.

In an interview on SuperSport’s Soccer Africa, CAF’s acting Secretary-General, Samson Adamu, admitted it wasn’t an easy call, but the priority was making sure the teams get the best possible environment to play in.

The WAFCON was supposed to kick off on March 17, this year, but it was moved to July 25 through August 16.

Speaking on the development, Adamu said, “The reason we delayed the WAFCON was that there were circumstances beyond us at the time that wouldn’t permit us to have the best competition possible.

“Also after having a very successful Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, for the men, It was very important that the WAFCON is organised under the right and perfect conditions for the women.”
