Just 10 grams of high-quality Kinam wood can cost nearly ₹85 lakh. This rare wood is mainly found in parts of Southeast Asia and sometimes in the forests of Assam, India.
How Does Kynam Wood Form?

Kynam wood does not naturally grow inside every tree. It forms only under special conditions in Aquilaria trees after a fungal infection attacks the wood. To protect itself, the tree produces a dark aromatic resin deep inside the trunk. Over many decades or even centuries, this resin slowly turns into the highly valuable Kynam wood. Only a very small number of trees develop this rare quality.

Kynam is famous for its deep, long-lasting and complex fragrance. Because it is extremely rare, collectors and luxury perfume makers pay huge prices for it. In 2021, a 16-kilogram piece of around 600-year-old Kynam wood was reportedly sold for nearly ₹171 crore. In Japan, this wood is known as “Kyara” and is often called the “King of Agarwood.”

Kynam wood is mainly used in luxury perfumes, incense sticks and spiritual ceremonies. Oud perfume, which is highly popular in the Middle East and Asia, is often made using rare agarwood resin.
