When I Finished Building This House, Ben Bruce Came To Me And Said “Why Do You Hate Money” -Utomi

Political economist and Professor of Entrepreneurship, Prof. Pat Utomi, has shared a personal story about a conversation he had with media entrepreneur Ben Murray-Bruce, revealing why he believes helping others succeed is more important than accumulating personal wealth.

Speaking during an interview on The Legacy Series on Thursday, 16 July, 2026, Utomi recalled that the discussion took place shortly after he completed the construction of his home about 20 years ago. He said Murray-Bruce questioned his attitude towards money after observing his modest lifestyle despite his accomplishments and influence.

“When I finished building this house about 20 years ago, Ben Murray Bruce came to see me and said, ‘Thank God you have done thing for a change for yourself.’ He said, ‘I have been meaning to ask you, why do you hate money?’

I said, ‘Me?, Professor of Entrepreneurship, how can I hate money?’ He said, ‘I have been looking at all the people who have made a fortune taking advantage of you and how modestly you live and I thought to myself maybe this guy hates money.’ I said, ‘I don’t hate money, but I will have a greater effect in the world if I help 50 people become successful.’”
